About Jammu Sightseeing

Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu & Kashmir, is often called the “City of Temples” for the sheer density of shrines packed into its old quarter. A half-day or full-day city tour typically covers the Raghunath Temple complex — one of the largest temple complexes in North India — along with Bahu Fort overlooking the Tawi river, Amar Mahal Palace (now a museum with a striking pink sandstone facade), Mubarak Mandi Palace, and the Ranbireshwar Temple.

For pilgrims coming through Jammu on their way to or from Katra, a sightseeing add-on is an easy way to see a genuinely historic city without adding much to the trip, since Jammu is already the gateway most visitors pass through.

Getting There

Jammu is about 48 km from Katra, roughly ninety minutes by road on a well-maintained route. Because it’s the transit hub for flights, trains, and buses arriving into the region, most itineraries already pass through Jammu — a sightseeing stop simply extends the time spent there rather than requiring a separate trip.

Best Time to Visit

October through March brings comfortable daytime temperatures for walking between sites. Summers (April to June) can get quite hot in the city, so an early-morning or late-afternoon tour is more comfortable if visiting then.

Good to Know

  • Bahu Fort also houses a small zoo and a garden popular with local families in the evenings.
  • Many temples have modest dress expectations — covering shoulders and knees is appreciated.
  • The old city’s narrow lanes around Raghunath Bazaar are worth a walk for local handicrafts.
