About Pahalgam
Pahalgam, the “Valley of Shepherds,” sits along the Lidder river amid pine forest and open meadow, and serves as the traditional base camp for the Amarnath Yatra each summer. Beyond its pilgrimage role, it’s a popular stop in its own right for Betaab Valley (named after the Bollywood film shot there) and Aru Valley, both reachable by local taxi from the town, offering walking trails, pony rides, and riverside picnic spots against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks for much of the year.
Its slower pace compared to Srinagar or Gulmarg makes it a favourite for travellers who want a couple of quiet, scenic days rather than a packed sightseeing schedule.
Getting There
Pahalgam is roughly 330 km from Katra, nine to ten hours by road including the stretch through Srinagar, from where it’s a further two hours or so. As with Gulmarg, it’s usually visited as part of a multi-day Kashmir extension rather than directly from Katra.
Best Time to Visit
April through October covers the most comfortable travel window, with peak greenery from May through August. Winters bring snow and much colder temperatures with more limited local transport, so this is more of a warm-season destination for most travellers.
Good to Know
- Local sightseeing within Betaab and Aru valleys typically requires shared or private taxis arranged in town — self-drive access is restricted in parts.
- River-side spots can get busy in peak season (May–June); early mornings are quieter.
- Pahalgam gets noticeably cooler at night than Srinagar, even in summer.
