About Sonmarg
Sonmarg — the “Meadow of Gold” — sits at the edge of Kashmir where the road climbs on toward Zoji La pass and, eventually, Ladakh. It’s best known for the Thajiwas Glacier, reachable by a short pony ride or walk from the main road, and for high-altitude meadows that stay carpeted in wildflowers through the short summer season. The Sindh river runs alongside much of the approach, making for a scenic drive in its own right even before reaching the meadow itself.
Because it marks the start of the high-mountain routes toward Ladakh, Sonmarg has a distinctly different, wilder character compared to Srinagar or Gulmarg — fewer crowds, more open landscape, and noticeably cooler air even in peak summer.
Getting There
Sonmarg is roughly 340 km from Katra, nine to ten hours by road via Srinagar, from where it’s a further two to three hours. Like Gulmarg and Pahalgam, it’s almost always visited as part of a multi-day Kashmir extension rather than a direct trip from Katra.
Best Time to Visit
May through September is the reliable window — the road toward Sonmarg (and onward toward Zoji La) is snowbound outside this period and closes seasonally. Early summer (May–June) often still has good snow cover near Thajiwas Glacier alongside blooming lower meadows.
Good to Know
- The road beyond Sonmarg toward Zoji La is subject to seasonal closure and traffic-timing restrictions — relevant mainly if continuing toward Ladakh.
- Pony rides to Thajiwas Glacier are the common way to cover the last stretch; agree the price before setting off.
- Weather can change quickly at this altitude — a light waterproof layer is worth carrying even in summer.
