Quick Answer
The essentials most pilgrims are glad they packed: comfortable, broken-in walking shoes, a light jacket or shawl (Bhavan is noticeably cooler than Katra even in summer), a reusable water bottle, and any personal medication. Add a power bank if you rely on your phone, since charging points along the route are limited. Everything else on this list is about making those essentials work for your specific trip.
Footwear
Broken-in, comfortable walking shoes matter more than almost anything else on this list. You'll be on your feet for hours regardless of whether you walk, ride a pony, or take a palki part of the way. Avoid wearing brand-new shoes for the first time on the trek itself.
Clothing: Pack for Two Climates, Not One
Katra and Bhavan are not the same climate. Bhavan sits at a higher altitude and is noticeably cooler, especially early morning and evening. A light jacket or shawl earns its space in your bag even if you're travelling in peak summer. If you're visiting between December and February, pack proper warm layers: winter at Bhavan brings occasional snow.
Documents
- Yatra Slip registration details — if you registered online in advance via the official SMVDSB portal, bring your printout to exchange for the physical RFID card at a registration counter on arrival. If you didn't register online, you can do it on the spot at the Katra Bus Stand or Railway Station counters.
- ID proof for every traveller, since it's required for Yatra Slip / RFID registration.
- Booking confirmation for your hotel and any helicopter or battery car tickets.
Health & Comfort
- Personal medication — especially if you have a pre-existing heart, lung, or mobility condition, it's worth checking with your doctor before the trip.
- A reusable water bottle — the route has stalls and langars (community kitchens) offering water at regular intervals, so refilling is easy.
- Anything you personally rely on for altitude or long walks; medical aid posts with basic first-aid and oxygen support are stationed along the route if needed, particularly useful near Bhavan.
Electronics
- A power bank. Charging points exist at some stalls and rest points, but it's safest to start the trek with a full battery and not depend on finding one.
- Expect weak or no signal inside the Bhavan cave/sanctum itself — most pilgrims treat this as a natural phone-free moment rather than a problem to solve.
What You Can Skip
- Bottled water in bulk — the trek route is well served with stalls and langars, so you don't need to carry more than one refillable bottle.
- A specific food supply — Katra's food culture is almost entirely vegetarian, and Jain (no onion/garlic) options are widely available on request at most hotels and restaurants, so there's no need to bring your own meals.
- A second SIM, unless staying connected is unusually important to you — coverage is generally reliable in Katra and along most of the trek, though it's worth knowing signal can weaken in patches closer to Bhavan.
Travelling with Seniors or Anyone with Mobility Needs
Pack the same essentials above, plus let us know about any mobility needs when you build your itinerary. Battery cars, palkis, ponies, and helicopter options mean very little of the route needs to be walked if that's a concern, and limited wheelchair assistance is available in parts of the complex on request.
