This page is for Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Hinjewadi travellers, including IT teams and multi-generation families, who want a clear plan for the long journey. Pune has a useful daily train that most other western cities do not.

We are a private tour planner, not the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. Helicopter tickets, yatra registration and other Shrine Board services are official and booked at maavaishnodevi.org; we help you plan and complete them.

How to Reach Vaishno Devi from Pune

By Flight

Direct and connecting flights to Jammu take roughly 2.5–3.5 hours.

By Train

Trains from Pune to Jammu Tawi take approximately 28–30 hours, followed by a 45–60 minute transfer on to Katra.

By Road

At around 1,900 km, driving is not practical from Pune.

Flying is still faster overall, but Pune is one of the better-served routes for rail — the daily Jhelum Express makes the train a genuinely reasonable choice if you'd rather travel overnight and skip the airport.

Good to know

The Jhelum Express runs this route daily direct to Jammu Tawi, which makes it one of the more flexible train options on this list if your travel dates aren't fixed yet and you'd rather not plan around a weekly-only departure.

  • Airport and station. Flights leave from Pune Airport at Lohegaon, usually with a connection through Delhi or Mumbai. Trains to Jammu Tawi leave from Pune Junction, including the daily Jhelum Express.
  • Flight vs train, for Pune. Flying is about three hours in the air but close to a full day door to door once you count the connection and the cab from Jammu. The Jhelum Express takes roughly a day and a night. Because it runs daily, you can fit it to your dates instead of building the trip around a weekly train.
  • Train out, fly back. Many Pune families take the train one way and fly the other. It balances cost and time, and spares older parents a second night on the rails after the climb.

Sample Itinerary Starting from Pune

  1. Day 0

    Pune: board the Jhelum Express

Reserve a berth in a class you can sleep in. Carry snacks, a light blanket, chargers and enough water for the day. If you are flying, this is the day you leave for Jammu with a connection.

  2. Day 1

    Reach Jammu, cab to Katra

Arrive at Jammu Tawi, take a cab of about an hour to Katra, check in and rest. Do not start the climb straight after the journey.

  3. Day 2

    Darshan day

Start early, use the water points on the route, and decide at Ardhkuwari whether to continue on foot or switch to a pony or battery car. Helicopter tickets are issued through the Shrine Board's official process at maavaishnodevi.org, which we can guide you through.

  4. Day 3

    Rest and start the return

Take a slow morning, then fly home from Jammu with a connection, or board the return train. Leave Katra at least four hours before departure.

Five days: train out, fly back

The plan we suggest most often from Pune, because the flight home spares you another night on the train.

  1. Day 1

    Jhelum Express from Pune

Spend the day and night on board, in a berth class you can sleep in.

  2. Day 2

    Reach Jammu, cab to Katra

Arrive, transfer to Katra and rest.

  3. Day 3

    Darshan

Climb early, complete darshan and return to Katra for the night.

  4. Day 4

    Fly home from Jammu

Take an afternoon flight with one stop back to Pune.

Practical Tips for Pune Travellers

  • Book the Jhelum Express early. It is daily, but popular in May and the Diwali window. Reserve as soon as the booking window opens.
  • Three days means the yatra, not the trip. The outbound leg from Pune eats most of a day. A three-day package really covers the yatra itself, so allow two more days for travel.
  • Avoid the May break. Pune schools and IT offices peak in May. Late September and November are calmer and cheaper at Katra.
  • Check both legs together. A one-way train plus a one-way flight can be cheaper, but a one-stop flight home must connect in daylight. Compare both legs before confirming the outbound.

When to Travel from Pune

Pune schools break in May, which is peak season at the shrine and for fares. Late September, November and February are more relaxed. Long weekends around Diwali and Ganesh Chaturthi are busy for Pune travellers, so book trains early.

FAQs for Pune Travellers

Is the Jhelum Express a good option from Pune?

It is one of the more dependable ones because it runs daily. It is a long ride, so book a berth in a class you can sleep in and confirm the timings on IRCTC.

Should we take the train one way and fly the other?

Many Pune families do. The train out saves fare, and a flight back gets you home quickly after the tiring climb.

How long is the journey from Pune to Katra?

By train, roughly a day and a night to Jammu Tawi, then about an hour by road to Katra. Flying is about three hours in the air, but with a connection and transfers it is still close to a full day.

How many days do I need from Pune?

Five days with train out and flight back, four if you fly both ways, six if you take the train both ways.

Can a Hinjewadi office group book together?

Yes. Groups can share cabs and hotel blocks, which usually lowers the per-head price. Enter the group size in the wizard for a quote.
