About Gulmarg

Gulmarg — literally “Meadow of Flowers” — is Kashmir’s best-known hill resort, alternating between a lush golf-and-meadow destination in summer and one of India’s premier snow-sports spots in winter. Its biggest draw is the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world, which climbs in two stages toward Apharwat Peak and offers sweeping views of the Pir Panjal range. In winter, the resort draws skiers and snowboarders; in summer, the meadow and its surrounding pine forest are popular for walks, pony rides, and the high-altitude golf course.

Because it sits close to Srinagar, Gulmarg is almost always visited as a day trip from there rather than a standalone base.

Getting There

Gulmarg is roughly 310 km from Katra, around nine hours by road including the stretch through Srinagar, from where it’s a further hour or so up into the hills. Most itineraries reach it as a day excursion from a Srinagar base rather than travelling there directly from Katra.

Best Time to Visit

December through February is peak season for snow and skiing, when the Gondola and slopes see the most visitors. April through June brings the meadow to life with wildflowers and much milder weather, better suited to travellers who prefer walking over snow sports.

Good to Know

  • Gondola tickets and stage access can be limited during peak season — arriving early in the day helps.
  • Warm, waterproof clothing is essential for winter visits; layers work well for the shoulder seasons.
  • Basic ski/snowboard rental gear is available locally, but experienced travellers often prefer bringing their own.
