About Patnitop

Patnitop (locally also spelled Patnitop or Patni Top) is a hill station in Udhampur district sitting at roughly 2,024 metres, known for its wide grassy meadow ringed by thick pine and deodar forest. It was originally developed as a summer retreat and today draws visitors for its cool climate, gentle walking trails, and views out over the Chenab valley. In winter it turns into one of North India’s more accessible spots for snow play and short skiing/sledging sessions.

The main meadow area is compact and easy to explore on foot in a couple of hours, while adventure operators nearby run paragliding, zorbing, and cable car rides seasonally — worth checking ahead since availability depends on weather and season.

Getting There

Patnitop is about 110 km from Katra, roughly a three-hour drive along the Jammu–Srinagar national highway, which itself is a scenic stretch through the Shivalik foothills. It’s commonly combined with Nathatop, which sits a short drive further up the same road, making a Patnitop + Nathatop day trip a natural pairing.

Best Time to Visit

April through June brings the meadow to its greenest, with pleasant daytime temperatures well below the plains. December through February brings snowfall, popular with visitors chasing their first sight of snow. The monsoon months can bring fog and slippery roads, so it’s worth checking conditions before travelling then.

Good to Know

  • Warm layers are worth packing even in summer evenings — temperatures drop quickly after sunset.
  • Adventure activities (paragliding, cable car) are weather-dependent and may close without notice.
  • The highway stretch has multiple viewpoints worth a short stop even if you’re not staying long.
